ADHD refers to a chronic biobehavioral disorder that initially manifests in childhood and is characterized by hyperactivity, impulsivity, and/or inattention, procratination. Scientists do not know the exact cause of ADHD. There are clinical studies that show it is inherited and does run in families. Eating sugar, watching a lot of TV or parenting styles are not the cause of it. However parenting styles can make a significant difference in the treatment of this condition. Clinical studies do show that the best treatment in severe cases includes medication, parents, teachers, the therapist and the child all working together.
According to a 2007 national survey about 5.4 million children ages 4-17 have been diagnosed with ADHD. Ignoring it will not make it go away nor make it any easier for parent or child. Likewise 70% of those correctly diagnosed do not “out-grow” it and it follows them into adulthood.
Family counseling may help to promote better relationships and understanding within a family. It may be incident specific, as for example family counseling when there are repeated unresolved issues, disagreements over child rearing, before a child leaves for college, before or after deployment in the military, before a career or job change or before moving to a different city, unresolved financial matters, spending, credit card usage, over-use of computer time or games etc., chronic illness or caring for aging parents, in-law difficulties, the approaching death of a family member or relative.

The marriage contract infers that needs for affection and sex will be met within the relationship. When these needs are not met within the relationship, the marriage becomes very vulnerable. Many other issues can be resolved through marriage counseling before they become very damaging to the relationship. This includes abuse of alcohol or other drugs . Many couples enter the marriage with vastly different and undiscussed expectations about the marriage or what their idea of the role of husband or wife is to be. This can result in many dissappointments, disagreements and resentments over time. The changes that come about with a new baby, with growing children, with parenting teen-agers etc. can and does cause a great strain on the relationship.
During the last 10 years with the on-going deployment and re-deployment of either or both husband and wife in the National Guard or regular Military, has put great stresses on marriages. Seeking help early can make the difference between saving or losing a relationship or marriage.
